An 11-year-old girl was abducted by a neighborhood man who intended to hold her for ransom. Once the word got out about the kidnapping, he got spooked and feared he would be caught. His intention, at that point, was to quietly kill and dismember her to avoid capture. The parents pled with the man through the media and social media and the police received thousands of volunteers to help find the girl. The man was 59-year-old Sergey Vikhlyantsev who believed her parents were wealthy. Police and volunteers searched for her for five days and eventually knocked on Vikhlyantsev’s door, rescuing the girl and reuniting her with her parents.

Sergey. Sergey Vikhlyantsev, a 59-year-old grandfather, kidnapped the 11-year-old daughter of a couple he perceived to be wealthy. He followed the little girl on her way to school. He approached her in disguise and abducted her, taking her to his flat.

Anya. Anya Vypretskaya was walking to school like normal when she was approached by Sergey. He was disguised as a policeman and carried a fake ID. He told the 11-year-old girl that she was under arrest and tied her up, bundled her up and threw her in the back of his car. She was terrified and too young to think she had something.

Former Shop Loader. Sergey was a former employee of a shop that was owned by Anya’s parents. He had a debt that he needed to pay and felt they were wealthy enough to pay a ransom for their daughter’s life. After kidnapping her, he took her home intending to send him demands to them soon.

Ransom. The abduction was intended to allow Sergey to require a ransom from the girl’s parents. Anya’s parents issued a very emotional plea on social media to return her. The plea was effective in scaring Sergey more than appealing to him and he began to make to dispose of Anya.

The Plea. Alexander and Galina, Anya’s parents, put out their social media appeal saying: “We’re are in despair, we are ready to meet all your conditions. We cannot sleep, do not eat, and keep crying. Please, hear us. We pray for you and our child. We are an honest family, we will keep our word.”

Abducted. While she was abducted, Sergey kept Anya at his flat. She was not tied up or bound while she was there, and she was unmolested. On her second day there, she managed to turn on her cell phone (which was switched off) and call her mother. She told her mother that she was being held by a man in Kamyshin, close to a market.

Volunteers. Once word got out of Anya’s abduction, volunteers streamed in to help the police search for her. The police began searching, knocking on every door in the city of Kamyshin looking for Anya. There were 1,340 police and thousands of additional civilian volunteers knocking on every door, searching for Anya.

Knocking on the Door. When they knocked on the door, Sergey answered, but was being very evasive and cagey about allowing the police inside. When they explained why they were knocking on his door, Anya chimed in from a room within the flat “You must be looking for me.” The police immediately rescued her and took Sergey into custody.

Scared. Sergey saw the large numbers of people rallying to help find Anya and got nervous. He never even made his ransom demands and began planning to kill her and get rid of her body. Fortunately, on the fifth day of her abduction, the police had reached his door.

Aid. The help and offers that they received when trying to find their daughter really meant a lot to the family. Alexander, Anya’s father, said “I could never imagine so many people would support us. People from many towns in Russia sent me messages and offered money to pay the kidnapper. Now I know that people will help when you are in trouble.”

Interrogated. When police interrogated Sergey, they found out about his previous employment and his debts. He owed a large £4,000 debt that he wanted to be covered but the outcry from the public and the mobilization to find Anya was so swift he was unable to make his ransom demands. Instead, he began making plans to cover up his crime.

Plans to Murder. According to Alexander Kravchenko, the head of Volgograd region police, Sergey was frightened and “planned to quietly kill the child and dismember her body.” He intended to use his crossbow to kill her and a hatchet to dismember her. No further plans, like where he intended to hide her body, were released.

Rescue. The police broke into the house, arresting Sergey and quickly taking Anya to be reunited with her parents. She was taken care of and examined and thankfully showed no signs of torture or molestation. She was able to confirm this information with the police herself.

Help from Others. When shown his daughters kidnapper, Anya’s father recognized him, having seen him regularly around town. He said, “He is the last person we suspected of being a kidnapper.” Currently, Sergey faces up to 12 years in jail if he is convicted of kidnapping Anya. Anya’s parents are just happy to have her back and safe.

Reunited. The little family was publicly reunited after their five-day ordeal. Considering how the statistics for most kidnappings, this is one of the best outcomes to ever happen. Anya is healthy and safe with her parents and many are still sharing their congratulations and well wishes for the family.
